Lewis Nashner began his career as a Senior Scientist at the RS Dow Neurological Sciences Institute of the Oregon Health and Sciences University. He served as the Institute’s Chairman from 1980 to 1984. At the same time, he was an Adjunct Professor of Physiology at the Oregon Health and Sciences University. Lew was awarded a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health in the 1976 and was continuously funded as principle investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health research awards from 1976 until 1985. Lew published over 70 original research articles and book chapters in the field of human balance and movement control.
Lew foundered Neurocom International, Inc. in 1983 and served as its Chairman and CEO until the company was acquired by Natus Biomedical, Inc., a Nasdaq listed company, in October of 2008. Neurocom’s technology was derived from the basic and clinical research of Lew and his research colleagues. Lew holds 20 US and foreign patents for methods and devices related to balance technology. Lew was the principle investigator on 3 Phase I and 2 Phase II Small Business Innovation Research Grants, which provided the bulk of the company’s initial capital. As the company began to grow, Lew also raised two rounds of venture funding for the company totaling $5.3M.
Neurocom pioneered and became the worldwide leader in computerized (robotic) devices for evaluating and rehabilitating patients with chronic balance and mobility disorders. Its product line grew to include devices assisting physicians in diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, and outcome documentation, as well as devices used by physical therapists in the rehabilitation process. In the US market, Neurocom distributed products through a hybrid network of direct salespeople and independent sales representatives. Internationally, the company was represented throughout the developed world by over 25 distributors. At the time of its sale, Neurocom technology was in broad use within the US and all countries within the developed world.
Lew received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 and 1967, respectively. He received the Sc.D. degree in 1970, also from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specializing in neuroscience and human balance and movement control.
